Sports Medicine

The OhioHealth Sports Medicine Institute is a team of medical professionals that can treat anyone from the active adult to the accomplished athlete.  There are more than 30 athletic trainers, more than 30 physicians board-certified in sports medicine, and rehabilitation and physical therapy specialists on the team.

Our physicians provide medical coverage for two professional sports teams:

  • Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League
  • Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew

We also work with more than 20 high schools, four colleges and several training groups.

We Help You Get in the Game

We've set up a website to help athletes get the information they want and need to be better at what they do. Meet our athletic trainers, get information on injuries and treaments plus more.

OhioHealth Sports Medicine has more fellowship-trained sports medicine physicians and locations in the Columbus area than any of the other healthcare systems combined in the region.

Our Concussion Team

In 2007, OhioHealth Sports Medicine established the most comprehensive team of experts for sports concussions in central Ohio. Concussions are a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that can be caused by a direct hit to the head or by a hit to the body causing the head and neck to whiplash.

We provide advanced care for sports-related concussions from the moment a concussion occurs to the athlete's safe return to play.

The OhioHealth Concussion Team consists of athletic trainers and physicians who specialize in sports medicine and neurology. We work collaboratively with injured athletes, families, coaches, athletic trainers and personal physicians to create and implement a customized care plan for each patient.

   Our OhioHealth Concussion Team physicians:

ImPACT Testing

An ImPACT test is a computer program that helps determine an athlete's brain function. It measures multiple neuropsychological variables such as:

  • Attention span
  • Working memory
  • Sustained and selective attention time
  • Response variability
  • Non-verbal problem solving
  • Reaction time

If an athlete who has had a baseline evaluation later shows signs or symptoms of a concussion, one of our OhioHealth Concussion Team experts can re-test the athlete and compare new test results to the baseline evaluation. This ImPACT testing, along with a full clinical assessment, helps our experts manage sports-related concussions and return-to-play decisions.

ImPACT testing can be done with an OhioHealth athletic trainer at the athlete's school or with one of our OhioHealth Concussion Team physicians in their office.

To schedule an appointment with a concussion team physician, or to schedule an athlete baseline ImPACT test, call (614) 566-GAME (4263).
